The IB Diploma is a prestigious international pre-university qualification and is recognised by universities and governments throughout the world. It has been in existence for forty years and the IB programmes are offered in more than 2,300 schools in 116 countries to approximately 200,000 students. The IB has grown in size over 7 times since 1991 indicating the substantial level of interest there is in it. In June 2008 there were 159 schools in the UK offering it and by June 2009 there will be over 200 schools. In the Financial Times 2008 it referred to the Diploma Programme as ‘the only UK post 16 programme offering perfect preparation for university’.
IB students study for the IB Diploma over two years in the 6th Form. All IB Diploma Students take six subjects and maintain the study of a breadth of disciplines as well as studying in depth. Students take three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. In addition, all students complete a research paper on a topic of their choice (Extended Essay), take a course in critical thinking (Theory of Knowledge) and complete a programme of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS). The award of the Diploma is recognition that students have completed all parts of the programme and marks a high level of achievement. Flexibility of choice allows students to follow their interests, while the complete nature of the Diploma maintains breadth of study. The deliberate combination of breadth and depth equips students with the skills and attitudes they require for higher education or employment and engenders international understanding and responsible citizenship. blank_page For all information please view the pdf below:
